Sometimes during a LOLER inspection, an item doesn\u2019t pass the safety check – and that\u2019s what I call \u201cFailed With Love<\/em>\u201d. I know how much your kit means to you, not just in cost but in the trust you\u2019ve built using it every day. When something fails, it\u2019s never about catching you out – it\u2019s about keeping you safe and making sure you can keep working with confidence.

Preparation<\/h3><\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

To make your inspection quick, accurate, and hassle-free, please have the following ready:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Clean Your Kit<\/strong> – Remove mud, sap and debris so equipment can be examined properly.<\/li>\n
  • Bring Any Receipts<\/strong> – Useful for verifying age and purchase history.<\/li>\n
  • I.D. Marks<\/strong> – Ensure your equipment is clearly and permanently marked for
    \nidentification.<\/li>\n
  • Empty Your Bag<\/strong> – No extra tools, PPE or unrelated items in your climbing bag –
    \njust the kit to be inspected.<\/li>\n
  • Rope Ends<\/strong> – If ropes have been cut, bring the ends for inspection where possible.<\/li>\n
  • Leave Out Failed or Non-LOLER Items<\/strong> – Don\u2019t include equipment that has already
    \nfailed inspection or items not covered by LOLER (e.g., clothing, chainsaws, etc.).<\/li>\n
  • Previous LOLER Reports<\/strong> – If available, attach or bring copies to help track

    \nThe examiner will look for:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Cuts, nicks and abrasion <\/strong>to the outer sheath<\/li>\n
    • Fuzziness or glazing <\/strong>from heat or friction<\/li>\n
    • Flat spots or lumps <\/strong>indicating core damage<\/li>\n
    • Chemical contamination <\/strong>(oil, fuel, herbicide, etc.)<\/li>\n
    • Soft or stiff sections <\/strong>that could affect strength and handling<\/li>\n
    • Integrity of terminations <\/strong>(splices, sewn eyes, or knots)<\/li>\n
    • Condition of protective rope ends <\/strong>and whipping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>[\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Harness Inspection” tab_id=”1756215800827-a03da3a8-9776″]

      (Sit harnesses, work positioning belts, chest harnesses)<\/em>
      \nThe examiner will look for:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Webbing <\/strong>– wear, fraying, UV damage or cuts<\/li>\n
      • Stitching<\/strong> – broken, loose or pulled threads<\/li>\n
      • Metal hardware<\/strong> – buckles, D-rings, adjusters for corrosion, cracks or deformation<\/li>\n
      • Padding<\/strong> – excessive compression or material breakdown<\/li>\n
      • Adjustment points<\/strong> – smooth operation and no slippage<\/li>\n
      • Labels & markings<\/strong> – legibility of manufacturer\u2019s info and CE\/EN standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>[\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Karabiners, Connectors & Metal Components” tab_id=”1756220609965-32b1aa34-dfd0″]

        (Karabiners, maillons, swivels, pulleys and mechanical devices)<\/em>

        • Gate action <\/strong>– opens smoothly, closes fully, and locks securely<\/li>\n
        • Locking mechanisms <\/strong>– no sticking, excessive play or jamming<\/li>\n
        • Body integrity <\/strong>– no cracks, distortion, sharp edges or excessive wear<\/li>\n
        • Corrosion or rust <\/strong>– especially at hinges and springs<\/li>\n

          (Work positioning lanyards, flip lines and anchor slings)<\/em>
          \nThe examiner will check:<\/p>\n

          • Webbing \/ rope condition <\/strong>– fraying, cuts and UV damage<\/li>\n
          • Wire-core lanyards <\/strong>– kinks, broken strands or corrosion<\/li>\n
          • Sewn terminations <\/strong>– stitching intact and secure<\/li>\n
          • Protective sheaths <\/strong>– no splits or excessive wear<\/li>\n
          • Adjusters <\/strong>– mechanical parts moving freely without excessive wear<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>[\/vc_tta_section][\/vc_tta_accordion][vc_column_text css=””]Functional Testing<\/strong>
            \nWhere appropriate, moving parts are operated to ensure they perform correctly under load

            After the inspection<\/h3><\/div> <\/div> <\/div>

            A LOLER report<\/strong> is issued for each item, recording:<\/p>\n

              \n
            • Unique ID or serial number<\/li>\n
            • Date of inspection<\/li>\n
            • Condition & pass \/ fail status<\/li>\n
            • Any defects found<\/li>\n
            • Recommended action (repair, quarantine or replace)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              A passed LOLER inspection means your kit is safe, legally compliant and ready for work<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

              Any FAILED items are labelled up with a red \u201cFailed With Love<\/em>\u201d tag are returned and recorded as unsafe to use.
